In response to Rob’s question (following a brief look in my Irish Music Dictionary), a “Planxty” is a tune written as a tribute or as thanks and given as a gift. O’Carolan is best known for his planxtys, and as a touring/ itinerant musician, he often “gave” his tunes to those who hosted him staying with them whilst travelling.
