Folk Group Term 33

Welcome back all.

Here’s a tune I wrote a little while ago, but couldn’t find a satisfactory title for. I think Ian would have liked it, so it’s for him now.

I can’t find much information about the Yarker Manuscripts, other than they’re from Cumbria, 1797. They are full of tunes from the North East, North West and Scotland. There’s not a lot in there, but here are three jigs that I liked. Jacky and the Cow sounds very much like a song, but the only lyrics I can find were written 70 years later. The harmony part is from the Yarker MS and doesn’t necessarily work, but isn’t bad 😉

Here’s a couple of tunes to honour the fabulous Robert Burns, who’s day was last Tuesday. These tunes are both played as Marches nowadays. Burns added lyrics to the existing melodies and made them popular.

Robert Burns wrote lyrics: My Love is But a Lassie Yet, which (for obvious reasons), I’ll not condone by typing here. If you’re interested here’s a link to lots of Burns poems including this one: http://www.robertburns.org/works/269.shtml

Looking at the borders of Ukraine I was reminded of these lovely Bessarabian tunes (now part of Moldova). Can’t remember where I learned the Sirba (a Klezmer dance), but the wedding dance is from Pete Cooper’s “All Around the World” cassette that I borrowed from a Canadian friend back in the 90s.

Here’s a lovely klezmer tune that’s a lot of fun once you’ve got the hand of the speedy bits. It’s ukulele friendly-ish! (We’ll do something harp friendly next week – sorry David).
